Born in Montreal in 1956, Guy St-Pierre developed an interest in drawing at an early age. His artistic journey began to take shape during his graphic design studies in the 1970s, when he explored a variety of mediums, including batik, screen printing, gouache and watercolour. A career in advertising further broadened his creative perspective, exposing him to different techniques and approaches to composition. By the 1990s, oil painting had naturally become his preferred medium, and the influence of the French Impressionists, particularly Claude Monet, began to shape the direction of his work.
After several solo exhibitions in the early 1990s, Guy continued to develop his artistic practice, drawing on his experience in visual communication and his appreciation for Impressionism.
For Guy, painting is a liberation and a return to the calm of nature. Working instinctively rather than analytically, he allows emotion, light and atmosphere to guide his brushstrokes. Forests, rivers, trails and lakes become sources of inspiration, chosen for their ability to evoke feelings and capture fleeting moments. Through spontaneous brushwork and expressive splashes of colour, he seeks to convey the essence of a scene and the ever-changing relationship between light, nature and perception.
His Impressionist approach is rooted in the interplay between observation and emotion, capturing those moments when changing light, seasons and surroundings transform the way we experience a landscape. Painting also offers him a moment of solitude and renewal, allowing him to immerse himself in the world around him and translate his personal vision through colour, light and form.
