Born in 1962 in Kadoma, Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia), Allen Egan began painting at the age of 16, influenced by the Landscape Impressionist movement. In 1981, he studied Graphic Design at Harare Polytechnic College, graduating in 1982. He worked in the print and graphic design industry before moving to South Africa in 1989, where he established a printing and manufacturing business while continuing to develop his art.
During his time in South Africa, Allen began focusing on portraiture, particularly depicting African people in rural settings. In 2000, he emigrated to Canada, settling in Gatineau, Quebec. He continued to paint and exhibit his work, travelling between Canada and South Africa for exhibitions and to gather photographic references.
Over the years, Allen’s work has evolved from portraiture into landscape and surrealist imagery. The human figure remains central to his paintings, but is placed within environments that become an important part of the story. He uses unusual settings, objects, and props to create scenes where something appears to have happened or is about to occur.
Allen approaches his paintings intuitively, often combining several images and ideas into a single composition. His works are intended to feel like a single frame from a film, leaving the viewer to imagine what came before and what may happen next.
Rather than creating a fixed or recognizable narrative, Allen leaves his paintings open to interpretation. He avoids imposing political or predetermined meanings, allowing each viewer to create their own story and understanding of the work. For Allen, this sense of uncertainty and unpredictability is an essential part of painting.
