Barbara Ursel is an award-winning contemporary Canadian painter of urban landscapes – not as subjects to be documented, but as inspiration for exploring perception, memory, light and atmosphere. A particular place may initially inspire her but, as she paints, recognizable places move toward abstraction.

Working in acrylics, Barbara alternates layers of opaque and transparent paint, building up values and complex colours on the canvas. She repeats this process dozens of times in a single painting to capture glowing light and intriguing shadows.

Barbara is interested in what happens when a familiar place becomes something more ambiguous, atmospheric and personal, no longer simply a particular place. Her paintings invite sustained contemplation, entice viewers to enter into them and, perhaps, recognize something of their own experience.
