As a Montrealer, Terry Tomalty stays true to his roots, capturing the vibrancy of the city that he has called home since 1935. Tomalty depicts what might be called the ‘everyday moments’ experienced on the streets of Montreal, conveyed through his own unique style, a testament to his self-directed artistic education.

Life plays out in Montreal’s back alleys, lamplit snowy streets and outdoor rinks, populated with kids wielding hockey sticks as well as bundled-up adults on their way in and out of the city’s many iconic Depanneurs. Tomalty captures this world with an unmistakable sense of nostalgia, using broad, confident brushstrokes and vibrant colours, transporting the viewer through the city’s ever-changing seasons.

Well-known for his hockey paintings, Tomalty succeeds in depicting the movement, excitement and energy of Montreal’s favourite game. His ability to portray the fan experience of his home team, the Montreal Canadiens, could only come from a true love of the sport.

Terry has painted for many NHL teams. In 2003, he was invited to accompany the Montreal Canadiens to document the first Outdoor Classic game in Edmonton–and in biting cold -30-degree temperatures! Few contemporary Canadian painters have enjoyed receiving coverage on National TV as Tomalty has. A truly remarkable Canadian artist, his subject matter is as timeless as his style.
