Jacques Poirier loves to paint the Laurentians the North Shore and the Charlevoix regions because of their character. What strikes everyone who views a Poirier painting for the first time is the extraordinary ruggedness of the landscape he has painted. Poirier does not use a lot of clashing colors or contrast in his paintings, he prefers subtleness with his colors, which lets the landscape itself be the star.  

“I have always been fascinated by the effects of light and shade found in nature, as well as by the play of colour contrasts, shading and tonal nuances and the diversity offered by the changing seasons.”

 During the past thirty-five years, numerous painting expeditions have taken Poirier to the Maritimes, to Western Canada and to the Northern U.S. However, for the most part his easel is set up somewhere in Quebec, his landscape of choice. He continues to be passionate about his art and even after all these years, the sight of a little village nestled in a valley, a waterfall or autumn foliage still inspires him. The Charlevoix Region, the Lower St-Lawrence, the North Shore, the Gaspé and the Magdalene Islands are his favourite spots. He feels that all the beauties nature has to offer have come together in one place, making him feel very much at home in this magnificent part of the country, as well as highly motivated.

“I feel privileged to be able to spend each day doing what I love. But life passes quickly and there are still so many beautiful places to paint. I think that at the end of it all, my only regret will be not having enough time, but; until then …”
