Johanne has been captivated by painting and printmaking since completing her art studies at the Université du Québec à Montréal in 1986.

She then went on to study art therapy and immersed herself in the pictorial expression of marginalized and vulnerable people. Johanne continued her services for the next 20 years working with the Montreal organization "Les Impatients." It was during this period that she   learned to appreciate the beauty of the free and meaningful gesture found in the Art Brut movement, which appeals to direct emotion.

In 1992 Johanne co-founded the printmaking studio "Le Zocalo" in Longueuil, Quebec, where she developed an expertise in woodcuts and monotypes. Working with a gouge, like using a brush on canvas, evokes the clear trace and spontaneous gesture that can be seen in her pictorial production.

Johannes’s paintings pay homage to gesture, color, and the expression of emotions which she particularly loves, and we can see that it plays an inseparable role in her work.

Nature is a common thread and featured throughout Johanne’s work. In 2021 she introduced the notion of repetition and transparency through the use of stencils. In the winter, following a move to the Laurentians, and due partially to the confinement required by the pandemic, she found inspiration and introspection that she drew from the nature that surrounded her.
