Bethany Harper Williams’ work is inspired by the landscapes around her. Having spent her summers by lakes and oceans, she is especially drawn to water—the calm and serenity, the energy and movement, the light, and its ever-changing hues. Her work explores abstraction in nature and its connection to collective emotion, questioning what is seen, what is remembered, and the feelings these evoke.
The expanse of nature provides her with an opportunity to abstract elements through expressive brushstrokes, subtle textures, and simple forms. Layers of unexpected shapes, patterns, and colours create a visual composite of both energy and calm. A low horizon line or the playful placement of gestural figures brings context to her expressive compositions of colour and texture.
After graduating with honours in Graphic Design from Concordia Fine Arts, Williams worked for over 20 years as a graphic designer before dedicating herself fully to painting.
Her work can be found in collections across Canada, the United States, and Europe, and she is represented by galleries in both the U.S. and throughout Canada.
