Juan Aquino was born in Lima, Peru and immigrated to Canada 1988. He received a BA in Psychology from the University Garcilaso de la Vega in Lima in 1982 and worked as a psychologist in the Lima employment department from 1977 to 1985. In 1987, J. Aquino studied drawing at the National School of Fine Arts in Lima and in 1997 he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from the University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM). He worked as a scene painter at Toontek, Cadmium and Scenic Film-Group Animation. Aquino has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Canada, Peru, Mexico, Nicaragua and the United States. He has been living and working in Montreal since 1988. Aquino’s work situates itself in the context of contemporary representational painting.
Juan Aquino’s abstract and dream-like landscapes and still lifes focus largely on the materialism of the painting medium. To see the work in person is essential to experiencing the beauty of these scenes. By using bold colours, textural materials and surreal imagery, Aquino creates highly evocative work that takes you on a visual journey.
