Katerina Mertikas’ spontaneous and fluid style painted in bright, bold acrylic, has become an easily identifiable and well-loved mainstay in the Canadian art landscape. Mertikas captures emotions and memories through her work, finding children at play to be her favorite subject.
Katerina Mertikas is a self-taught artist who was born in Tripoli, Greece in 1957. She and her family immigrated to Canada in the early 60’s, living first in Montreal and then in Ottawa.
Her two daughters were the original inspiration for her work, but today it is her grandchildren whose energy and playfulness is often depicted in her paintings. Mertikas had her first solo show in Montreal, in 1991 and has been showing successfully across Canada ever since.
